The elegant building that is now Ennerdale Country House Hotel was originally known as The Flosh, a distinguished Victorian country house dating back to 1832 and recognised today as a Grade II listed historic building for its architectural and cultural significance. In about 1837, it was purchased and extensively remodelled by Thomas Ainsworth, a successful local industrialist who owned the nearby Cleator Linen Mills and also developed iron ore interests. Ainsworth added a striking neo‑Elizabethan wing in 1866, creating the grand mansion seen today with elaborate gables, decorative chimneys and period detailing. The house stayed in the Ainsworth family for generations; one descendant, David Ainsworth, even served as Member of Parliament for West Cumberland. In the 20th century, The Flosh served as the council offices for the Ennerdale Rural District before later being converted into hospitality use, ultimately becoming the hotel guests enjoy today — blending historic grandeur with modern comfort.
Inside the historic The Flosh — the grand Victorian country house that later became Ennerdale Country House Hotel — visitors can admire an impressive Gothic fireplace dated 1866. This striking feature was created at the same time as the south wing extension added that year, during the ownership of the Ainsworth family, who were notable local industrialists. The over‑designed Gothic fireplace, located in the cross‑hall of the house, reflects the ornate and eclectic style popular in mid‑19th‑century country houses, and stands as a fine example of the craftsmanship and architectural richness introduced during the 1866 expansion of the building. The Flosh’s interiors — including this fireplace and the elaborately moulded ceilings — continue to give today’s guests a tangible link to the property’s 19th‑century heritage.
